Johannesburg North to face major road closures for Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg on October 26

From Craighall Park to Kyalami, major parts of Johannesburg North will grind to a halt on October 26, as thousands of cyclists take to the streets for Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg.

A sweeping series of road closures is expected to hit Johannesburg North on October 26, as Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg takes over the city.

Whether you are in Blairgowrie, Sunninghill, Kyalami, or Parktown North, be prepared for restricted movement from 04:00 to 17:00.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) confirmed that officers will be deployed across the route to ensure safety and guide traffic through designated alternative routes.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said: “We want to ensure the smooth running of the event, especially in high-traffic residential zones. This is a celebration of cycling, but also a major traffic operation, and residents must plan ahead.”

Suburbs in the north that will be affected are Kyalami & Kyalami Estates, Lonehill, Sunninghill, Woodmead, Bryanston, Westcliff, Parkwood, Craighall Park, Parktown North, Blairgowrie, Houghton, and Athol Oaklands. These areas form part of both the 97km and 35km race routes, meaning multiple closures and diversions throughout the day.
Major roads affected include:

  • Main Road (R55/Pitts Avenue to Zinnia Road),* Kingfisher Drive (Kingfisher Drive to Alexander Avenue),
  • Witkoppen Road (Main Road to Kingfisher Drive),
  • Moray Drive (Grosvenor Road to Cumberland Avenue),
  • Bram Fischer Drive (Homestead Avenue to Jan Smuts Avenue),
  • Jan Smuts Avenue/Bertha Street (Ntemi Piliso Street to Miriam Makeba Street),
  • R55/Pitts Avenue (Kyalami Glen Bivd to Allandale Road to Main Road),
  • Woodmead Drive/R55 (Woodmead Off-ramp on M1 North),
  • Woodmead Drive/R55 (Maxwell Drive (World of Golf) to Allandale Road), and
  • Jan Smuts Avenue/Bertha Street (Ntemi Piliso Street to Miriam Makeba Street).

The following alternative routes can be utilised in the affected areas:

  • Oxford Road,
  • Rivonia Road,
  • Louis Botha Avenue,
  • Empire Road,
  • Old Pretoria Main Road,
  • Winnie Mandela Drive, and
  • M1N Access from Empire Road and Jan Smuts Avenue.

“Residents and members of the public are urged to exercise caution and patience for cyclists during the duration of the race.
“We are appealing to road users to acquaint themselves with the traffic management for the day so they can plan their routes accordingly,” Fihla concluded.
