Hyde Park Precinct goes live, bringing cleaner and safer streets to Jan Smuts Avenue

A new precinct initiative brings coordinated cleaning, security, and beautification to Hyde Park’s stretch of Jan Smuts Avenue.

The Hyde Park Precinct (HPP) is officially live, marking a new chapter in efforts to improve cleanliness, safety, and urban management along the Jan Smuts Avenue corridor.
Launched in November 2025, the precinct has seen teams working consistently on the ground to address everyday challenges affecting the area.

Since its inception, HPP has deployed dedicated cleaning and security services aimed at creating a safer and more welcoming environment for residents, businesses, and commuters.

The cleaning team operates from Monday to Friday, focusing on removing litter, weeds, and illegal posters throughout the precinct.

Working alongside Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, the team has also helped maintain the median island along Jan Smuts Avenue, which has been beautified with seasonal flowers.

Ongoing maintenance of the flower beds ensures the area remains neat and visually appealing.

Security operations form another key pillar of the precinct’s work. In collaboration with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) and the South African Police Service (SAPS), HPP’s security team has addressed a range of by-law infringements, including illegal trading and loitering at busy traffic intersections.

The pedestrian bridge over Jan Smuts Avenue is also patrolled daily to ensure safe passage for pedestrians.

Looking ahead, HPP plans to expand its membership base in 2026. The aim is to strengthen support for the precinct and further enhance the Jan Smuts Avenue corridor through coordinated urban management, safety initiatives, and beautification efforts.
