Two people have died following a serious multi-vehicle accident on the M1 North near Glenhove Road, forcing a complete closure as emergency services respond and investigations continue.
A section of the M1 North remains closed following a fatal multi-vehicle accident that claimed the lives of two people in Houghton Estate.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) confirmed that the crash occurred on the M1 northbound before the Glenhove Road off-ramp.
Three motor vehicles were involved in the collision, with two fatalities confirmed at the scene.

JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla said officers were immediately dispatched and are currently managing traffic and securing the accident scene.
“We can confirm that three vehicles were involved in this serious collision and, regrettably, two fatalities have been declared on scene,” said Fihla. “Our officers are working closely with emergency services as fire and rescue attend to reports of entrapment in the wreckage.”
All northbound lanes have been closed at 11th Avenue to allow emergency responders to operate safely and to enable accident investigations to be conducted.
Fihla urged motorists to avoid the affected section of the highway and to use alternative routes.

“The M1 North is completely closed to traffic at 11th Avenue.
We are advising motorists to avoid the area between 11th Avenue and Glenhove Road and to make use of alternative routes such as Oxford Road, Louis Botha Avenue and Jan Smuts Avenue,” he said.
Heavy traffic delays are expected in the surrounding Houghton and Melrose areas, and the roadway is anticipated to remain closed for some time while the scene is cleared and processed.
“We appeal to motorists for patience and cooperation. Please drive with caution, yield to emergency vehicles, and follow the instructions of JMPD officers directing traffic at diversion points,” Fihla added.
Further updates will be provided once the situation changes and the road is deemed safe to reopen.
