New principal sets bold turnaround plan for Sandown High School
With discipline reforms already under way, the school’s new leadership says a sunrise moment has begun.
Sandown High School has entered, what its new principal Johan Lourens describes as a decisive turnaround phase, aimed at restoring academic excellence, discipline, and pride in the institution.
Lourens, who recently stepped into the role, said he was approached through the Gauteng Department of Education to help stabilise and reposition the school. “We are here to ensure there is a sunrise at Sandown. The children of Sandown deserve a fair deal. They come to school every day, their parents pay school fees, and they deserve an environment that is safe, conducive to learning, and something they can be proud of.”

Currently, the school’s matric pass rate stands at 79%, with a 38% Bachelor’s Degree pass rate. Lourens acknowledged that while the pass rate is solid, the bachelor rate is below both provincial expectations and the school’s own ambitions. “We are aiming much higher. The goal is not only a 100% pass rate, but between 70% and 80% Bachelor’s Degree passes. That is the level we believe Sandown can reach.”
He said the turnaround strategy includes a structured 30, 60, and 90-day action plan focused on tightening discipline, improving curriculum delivery, and reviving sport and stakeholder involvement. “One of the first things we addressed was discipline. Learners must arrive on time, attend class, and wear the correct uniform. When you wear this uniform, you are an ambassador for the school.”
He described the previous culture as one where some learners had grown accustomed to a lack of structure. However, he stressed that the majority of learners are respectful and eager to succeed. “There is a handful who challenge the system, but we are ready for that. The great majority want to learn.”

A strong focus has been placed on Grade 12 learners, particularly those identified as at risk or progressed from Grade 11. Saturday classes have already been introduced to strengthen support. “We are pushing the matric class hard. If we stabilise Grade 12, we send a message to the rest of the school.”
Beyond academics, leadership is also seeking corporate and alumni support to improve infrastructure and resources.

Contributions, Lourens said, do not necessarily have to be financial. “Corporate involvement is not always about money. It can be time, skills, and mentorship. Alumni engagement is crucial if this sunrise is to work.”
Dr Larry Harmer, who is supporting the management team with a focus on discipline, said early signs are encouraging. “Learners are already saying thank you for bringing structure. Teachers are teaching, learners are in class, and there is a noticeable shift in atmosphere.”
Looking ahead three years, Lourens is clear about his vision. “Sandown must become the best resourced, best performing public school of choice in Johannesburg and in Gauteng.”
