Suspect arrested after attempted robbery and police chase in Sandton

Police arrested one suspect and recovered two unlicensed firearms after a high-speed chase linked to an attempted robbery near a Sandton hotel, while two other suspects remain on the run.

One suspect has been arrested following an attempted armed robbery and subsequent police chase in the Sandown area of Sandton on Thursday afternoon.

According to the South African Police Service in Bramley, highway patrol officers received information about a white Toyota Corolla allegedly involved in an attempted armed robbery of a guest near a hotel in Sandton at approximately 14:00 on April 9.

Police mobilised members of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department and private security to trace the suspects. While driving along Katherine Street, officers spotted the vehicle carrying three occupants.

When police attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver sped off, leading to a chase.

During the pursuit, two suspects jumped out of the moving vehicle and fled on foot. Officers continued to follow the vehicle until it collided with a truck and came to a halt.

The driver then attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by police a short distance away.

Upon searching the vehicle, officers recovered two unlicensed pistols, ammunition and gloves. Police also established that the vehicle had been cloned and was originally hijacked in Daveyton in February 2026.

The suspect is expected to face charges including possession of a hijacked vehicle, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as reckless and negligent driving. Police have confirmed that efforts are underway to locate the two suspects who escaped.

Brigadier Brenda Muridili said the swift response by law enforcement agencies played a key role in the arrest.

“Our members acted quickly on the information received and worked together with other law enforcement partners to trace the suspects.

We remain committed to ensuring the safety of residents and visitors, and the search for the remaining suspects is continuing.”
