Author finds healing in writing after devastating loss

Local writer Melinda Ferguson shares how grief, love, and an unlikely rescue inspired her deeply personal memoir, Swift.

Acclaimed South African author and journalist Melinda Ferguson, who travels between Johannesburg and Cape Town, has released a deeply personal memoir that explores grief, resilience, and the healing power of storytelling.

Her latest book, Swift, was written in the weeks following the sudden death of her partner, Mathias. Ferguson said the writing process became a lifeline during one of the most painful periods of her life. “I began writing the book two weeks after Mathias left, in a fit of sorrow and madness. It was an insane period of deep grief after the sudden and inexplicable loss of my soul mate.”

She described writing for up to 18 hours a day, driven by an intense energy that helped her process the shock of loss. At the heart of the memoir is the rescue of a baby Swift bird, which Ferguson believes became a powerful symbol of survival. She said caring for the fragile bird gave her purpose during a time when everything felt uncertain.

“All I knew was that I had to get this little Swift to fledge. Grief is another whole landscape.” She explained that the book also touches on the practical realities that follow death, including paperwork and administrative processes. Ferguson said these experiences formed an important part of her journey through grief.

“Grief is its own country. It comes with many forms and stamps.” Part of the story unfolds against a fire-scorched landscape in the Breedekloof, where an approaching wildfire added to the emotional intensity of the period. Despite the pain that inspired the memoir, Ferguson hopes readers will walk away with a sense of hope and determination. “That life keeps going and that we should make the most of it,” she said.
