Bryanston Primary School’s six-a-side strengthens local rivalries
Bryanston Primary School welcomed neighbouring schools for a day of competitive sport, community spirit and growing regional pride at its annual six-a-side tournament.
The annual six-a-side tournament hosted by Bryanston Primary School on May 23 once again delivered an exciting celebration of school sport and community spirit, with neighbouring schools competing in soccer, netball and chess.
Schools that participated in the tournament included Bryandale Primary School, Bryaneven Primary School, Rivonia Primary School, Montrose Primary School and Crawford Lonehill.
Head of soccer at Bryanston Primary, Owen Mbatha, described the event as another successful edition of the long-running tournament.

“Yet again another successful tournament from Bryanston Primary at our annual six-a-side,” Mbatha said.

He added that the competition aims to strengthen relationships between neighbouring schools while improving the overall standard of sport in the region.
“So our six aside just entails all the neighbouring schools around our community. The plan is just to get those neighbouring schools to make their region a strong region, so that when we go out and compete with other districts and regions, we’re one of the best ones.”
Mbatha congratulated Bryneven Primary School for winning the overall soccer and netball trophy at this year’s tournament.

“In this year’s tournament, we also included chess because when this tournament first started many years back, there was chess involved. It was then stopped, but as a school we felt the need to bring back the tradition of the whole tournament, which included the chess.”
Albah Mabale, a teacher and head coach for the U10 soccer teams at Bryneven Primary, praised his players after both the A and B teams won their respective finals.
“I’m happy that the Bryaneven won the overall trophy for both netball and soccer,” Mabale said.

He acknowledged Bryanston Primary as one of their fiercest rivals and described the intense competition between the schools over recent years.
“Bryanston, the host team is always been our toughest opponent in the past three years; we’ve met each other in the finals four times. They only won it once, and then we won it three times, so it’s quite intense.
“All the preparation for this is challenging; it’s mixed emotions because you’re dealing with 10-year-olds that you’re trying to guide and protect their emotions, so yes, the competition was very fierce.”
