Sandton Chronicle coverage helps Sandton SPCA secure fourth new rescue vehicle

After reading the Sandton SPCA’s urgent need for reliable inspector vehicles in the Sandton Chronicle, the Roy McAlpine Charitable Foundation stepped in and funded a brand-new rescue vehicle for the animal welfare.

Just months after launching a campaign to raise funds for new inspector vehicles, the Sandton SPCA is celebrating another major milestone with the arrival of its fourth brand-new Isuzu rescue vehicle.

The latest addition, officially handed over on June 3, was sponsored by the Roy McAlpine Charitable Foundation after trustees saw a Sandton Chronicle article, Sandton SPCA appeals for community support to replace ageing inspector vehicles, published on February 13.

Trustee Anne McAlpine said supporting the SPCA was an easy decision after reading about their needs through the newspaper coverage. “This is a private foundation. It was founded by my late husband Roy, and we’re absolutely thrilled to participate in this project. We saw the article in the Sandton Chronicle. In fact, my sister pointed it out to me, and we were really happy to be able to assist.

“The SPCA plays such a vital role in our society. We are delighted to have this opportunity to partner with them in providing a vehicle for their respect to the work they do.”

Sandton SPCA general manager Nick Smith said the vehicle would play a role in helping inspectors respond to animal welfare cases and expand community outreach programmes. “We are super delighted to have our fourth vehicle, our fourth brand new Isuzu. This is a tremendous asset to us.

“The work that we do involves a lot of driving, with inspectors going out and doing animal welfare matters every day. This vehicle is going to make a massive difference to us. We’re aiming for five, but four gets us a real close to where we want to be.”

The donation comes after the Sandton SPCA revealed earlier this year that its fleet of five ageing vehicles had become increasingly unreliable, with some nearing 400 000km and experiencing mechanical failures during active rescue operations.

Smith added that this vehicle will add to the three vehicles which were donated early in May and would help the animal welfare conduct more inspections, investigations, and outreach projects throughout its service area. “Thanks to the trustees and the community for your unwavering support, and, of course, the Sandton Chronicle for putting us out there and helping make this happen.

“We have got four vehicles and we are still looking for one more. If anyone else would like to help us reach our goal, that would be a dream come true.”
