Jozi Cup 2026 finals showcase future cricket stars at DP World Wanderers Stadium

More than 2 200 players from 150 teams took part in the fifth edition of the Jozi Cup, with the tournament culminating in a memorable finals day at the DP World Wanderers Stadium on Youth Day.

The fifth edition of the Jozi Cup cricket tournament reached its conclusion on June 16 at the DP World Wanderers Stadium, bringing together some of the best young cricket talent from across Gauteng for a memorable finals day.

The tournament, which has grown significantly since its inception five years ago, featured more than 2 200 players representing 150 teams from nearly 30 clubs.

Matches were played across 38 venues over seven weeks, with age groups ranging from U11 to U18.

The first game of the finals was between GM Old Edwardians U14 and Western Warriors Titans U14.

The second match saw Randburg Tornadoes U16 face Jeppe U16, while the final game was between Soweto Pioneers U18 against GM Old Edwardians U18.

Addressing players, coaches, officials and supporters at the conclusion of the tournament, Lions Cricket CEO Jono Leaf-Wright reflected on the growth and impact of the competition.

“We started Jozi Cup five years ago with a vision of bringing together our community clubs, ensuring that we could allow players to have a platform to showcase their skills,” Leaf-Wright said.

“Having 12 finals culminate here at the iconic stadium is something very special to us as Lions Cricket.”

He also used the occasion to inspire the young cricketers, encouraging them to continue pursuing their dreams while embracing the values of leadership and citizenship.

“To all of you who did well and who didn’t do so well, whether you are getting a medal or not. For me, it’s about your championship character that we get to celebrate every single day.

“Keep that lion roaring loud and proud, stay in this province, keep dreaming big as proud South Africans and let’s build this province in this country together. Happy Youth Day and well done,” Leaf-Wright added.

Jozi Cup tournament director Reuben Mandlazi expressed his excitement about the success of the 2026 edition and the continued growth of the competition.

“Very excited about the 2026 season of Jozi Cup. Things went well, the tournament on display was fantastic,” Mandlazi said.

“Today we watched some really good cricket matches ranging from under 14s to all the way to under 18s, but these were just the highlights of what was happening during the past few days,” he added.

He expressed gratitude to the clubs that participated in the tournament. “We’re looking forward to seeing them next year again in 2027, bigger and better.”
