Last day of the ladies’ seniors tournament saw fierce battles on Morningside greens
The Johannesburg Bowls Ladies Seniors tournament finals delivered close contests as senior ladies bowlers battled for a champion’s title.
The click and clash of bowls echoed across the greens at Morningside Country Club on June 3 as the Johannesburg Bowls Ladies Seniors tournament reached its final stages.
With semi-finals spots and championship titles on the line, every delivery was measured, every angle carefully considered and every shot was released with care.
The tournament saw players discussing tactics with their teammates before stepping onto the mat. Bowls rolled slowly across the greens, drawing spectators’ eyes as competitors attempted to edge closer to the jack or remove their opponent’s bowls from scoring positions.

As the day drew to a close, the tournament winners were announced, with cash prizes for the winning team, and second and third runners-up. Diana Jerrard, Jill Sinclair and Lynda Delaney were named the champions of the tournament and were awarded R1 500.

Speaking on behalf of the team, Jerrard said, “We had a fabulous team. We jelled together very well, and we had a lot of fun. It’s not all about the money, it’s about the camaraderie.”
Desiree Clayden, Lynda Paige and Gail McLeod came second and earned R900. “It was the most wonderful tournament, the first time I’ve played myself. I had a wonderful team, and there was wonderful camaraderie, and very well organised by the committee,” Clayden said.

Third-place finishers Morel van Rensburg, Ana Maria Moita and Shirley Anderson took home R600.
Speaking on behalf of the team, the team skipper, Van Rensburg, said, “I’ve got a wonderful, wonderful team, I’m very proud of them, and we had a fabulous, fabulous time. I’d like to do it again next year.”

Johannesburg Bowls Ladies Seniors chairperson Jacqueline Lauder said the eight weeks of the tournament were not about winning, but about forming lasting relationships while enjoying the good game of bowls.
“The main objective of this tournament is to play good bowls, but even more important, is that we actually meet new people and we become friends, and that’s actually what happened.

“There’s no pressure, even though the bowls are serious. We had some provincial players here. We had good bowlers, but the main thing is that people left here feeling they’ve had a good game of bowls.”
