Bryanston’s stubborn leak on Bryanston Drive has been fixed again
Johannesburg Water says pressure in the system caused the latest repair work failure, but that it has now been tightened and the leak is no more.
A long-running water leak on Bryanston Drive, which frustrated residents and wasted thousands of litres of water, has finally been repaired.
During a site visit with the Sandton Chronicle on June 13, Ward 103 councillor Lynda Shackleford pointed to water flowing down the roadside, describing the situation as an example of the city’s ongoing struggle to prevent water losses amid growing pressure on municipal infrastructure. “Unfortunately, this last repair happened on June 5 and has not held, as you can see. The problem is, this is huge amount of water being wasted.

“Residents have reported it again. I’ve also escalated it through my urban inspector to Johannesburg Water, but, as of June 13, the team has not repaired the pipe. The water is still spilling.”

Responding to a media enquiry on June 18, JW spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala said the failure of the repair work done on June 5 was due to the elevated system pressure. “Following the restoration of water supply, elevated system pressure resulted in a minor leak at the repaired section. Our technical team subsequently revisited the site and tightened the affected component to address the issue.”

Shabalala added that the leak was attended to and repaired on June 15. “Should residents continue to experience any concerns at the location, Johannesburg Water requests that these be reported under a new or existing reference number to enable further investigation and appropriate action.”
