Ruva Chikoto eager to represent South Africa in Mongolia

As the International Junior Maths Olympiad draws closer, a Redhill learner is looking forward to representing South Africa while embracing the opportunity to learn about new cultures and build friendships with learners from around the world.

With the International Junior Maths Olympiad just around the corner, Redhill learner Ruva Chikoto is preparing to represent South Africa in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, where she will compete alongside some of the world’s brightest young mathematicians.

As the departure date approaches, Ruva said her excitement continues to grow. “Yes, a lot,” she said when asked whether the upcoming trip had started to feel real. Although she has been preparing through the school’s mathematics programme over the past two years, Ruva believes the journey has strengthened both her confidence and problem-solving abilities.

When it comes to mathematics, she knows exactly which challenges she enjoys the most. “I like doing long calculations but not geometry.” Away from the classroom, Ruva enjoys a variety of interests that help her maintain a balanced lifestyle. “My number one hobby would be tennis, followed by reading and writing.”

While the competition itself is a major highlight, Ruva is equally excited about the opportunity to experience Mongolian culture and interact with learners from across the globe. “I’m looking forward to the cultural event where each country at the maths competition has to perform a dance.”

Ruva believes strong teamwork will play an important role throughout the Olympiad. “Collaboration and communication,” she said, describing the qualities she believes are essential for a successful team. Although mathematics has opened international opportunities for her, Ruva said she is still exploring where her future aspirations may lead. “I’m not sure yet; a lot of my goals aren’t maths-related.”
