Thousands honour Mandela’s legacy at 2026 Mandela Day Walk & Run in Illovo

Participants of all ages took to the streets around DP World Wanderers Stadium, choosing to walk or run in celebration of Nelson Mandela’s legacy.

The spirit of Nelson Mandela was celebrated through fitness, community and giving back as thousands of people gathered at DP World Wanderers Stadium on July 19 for the 2026 Mandela Day Walk & Run.

The annual event encouraged people to honour Mandela’s legacy by taking part in physical activity while spending time with family, friends and fellow community members.

Participants could choose between a 5km walk, a 10km run or a 21km half marathon.

The event attracted seasoned runners, first-time participants and families, creating a festive atmosphere filled with music, encouragement and a shared commitment to making a difference.

One of the participants, Linda Dude, completed the 10km run and said it was an enjoyable experience from start to finish.

“The run was really nice and well organised.

The atmosphere along the route was great, and seeing so many people come together for Mandela Day made it even more special. Events like this remind us that staying active can also bring communities together,” said Dude.

Fellow 10km runner Omuhle Kubeka said crossing the finish line left her feeling proud and inspired.

“I am so happy that I took part today. It was a beautiful morning, and the support from other runners and spectators kept me motivated.

Finishing the race felt like a great achievement, and it was wonderful to celebrate Mandela Day in such a positive way,” said Kubeka.
