PSL condemns Loftus violence

JOBURG – The Premier Soccer League decries the violence at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday.

The Premier Soccer League has condemned the violence and hooliganism that erupted at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on 11 February during the Absa Premiership clash between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

Ugly scenes of violence and hooliganism erupted at the stadium as fans invaded the pitch in the 82nd minute of the game when the Brazilians were leading the Buccaneers 6–0.

The referee had to stop the match for the safety of players and match officials when missiles began raining down on the pitch.

Stadium security dealt with the pitch invaders and the game was delayed for close to 15 minutes and only resumed when it was declared safe to continue.

A statement from the league condemned the pitch invasion and the violence that followed between supporters of both clubs and took the opportunity to apologise to supporters and stakeholders, including those at the stadium and others, watching from home on television.

“Such behaviour at our stadiums is a bad advert for our football,” said league spokesperson Luxolo September, without elaborating what action will be taken against those found responsible.
