Nothing can stop this Brescia House athlete

At U13 level the athletes must complete three sessions which require a 400m run and five hits with a laser pistol from a distance of five metres.

Brescia House School laser run athlete Isla Thomas continues to reach new heights.

The young athlete was set to represent the South African Modern Pentathlon (Sampa) U13 age group at the Laser Run World Championships in Weiden, German on 24 August.

Laser run, a modern pentathlon event, combines the disciplines of running and shooting. At an U13 level the athletes must complete three sessions which require a 400m run and five hits with a laser pistol from a distance of five metres.

The event was unfortunately cancelled due to Covid-19 but Isla has remained motivated to get going once again next year.

According to her mother Rhona, Isla first got involved with the modern pentathlon world by participating in biathles which combined the disciplines of swimming and running. “Through biathle she got exposed to laser run and triathle (an event that combines running, shooting and swimming),” she said.

Isla ventured further into the sport and began competing in a tetrathlon, which combines the four disciplines of swimming, running, shooting and fencing.

In March she travelled to Bloemfontein to compete in the national championships when she placed 2nd in the U13 event.

Isla has now moved on to training for the fifth and final discipline of the modern pentathlon, horse riding.

“She can only compete in the full modern pentathlon at the age of 17,” said Rhona.
