From homes and schools to workplaces and local sports clubs, fans are proudly wearing their South African jerseys and gearing up for weeks of excitement as nations from around the globe battle for football’s ultimate prize.

For many South Africans, the World Cup is more than just a sporting event; it is an opportunity to unite behind a common cause, celebrate national pride, and support a team carrying the hopes of millions.

Local football enthusiasts say the tournament always brings communities together, whether through family braais, public screenings, friendly rivalries, or spirited discussions about predictions and potential champions.

Resident Ndamulelo Phale said he’s looking forward to the games, and thinks the South African team will go as far as reaching the semi-finals.

“It will be exciting to see who takes the cup.”

Another resident, Siba Sesmani, is rooting for the national team. “I am really hoping that team South Africa makes it out of the group stages. We are behind them and wish them well.”

ORIFHA NETSHIVALE: It’s been 16 years since Bafana Bafana qualified for the FIFA World Cup so this is exciting. I am supporting the boys and really hope they make it to the semi-finals.

While the world’s top teams prepare to take centre stage, local supporters remain firmly behind Bafana Bafana, hoping the national side can make the country proud and inspire the next generation of footballers.
