Boxer’s journey to WBC title fight

After a career-ending injury on the rugby field, Chris Thompson found redemption in the boxing ring, and now he’s one win away from world glory. Duduzile Khumalo

Sandton’s own Chris Thompson is preparing for the biggest fight of his boxing career, set to face Mussa Ajibu in a highly anticipated heavyweight clash at The Reckoning on May 1 at the Sunbet Arena.

With a WBC world title on the line, Thompson is ready to step into the spotlight and represent South Africa on home soil.

Thompson’s journey into the ring began unexpectedly. “I started my career as a professional rugby player, but after experiencing a significant injury, I had to find a new path forward. My wife, who was my girlfriend at the time, encouraged me to take up boxing. At the age of 22, I found my calling.”

He added that it was not an easy road. “The early days were tough. The physical grind, the mental toughness, and the sacrifices outside the gym were some of the biggest challenges. But I embraced every one of them.”

Over the years, Thompson said he has built a name for himself with performances that tested both his skill and heart. “The wins against top-tier competitors are the most fulfilling. They have proven that I belong at the highest level.”

Thompson explained that, preparing for his bout against Ajibu, he feels sharp and ready, with a strategy focused on aggression and precision. “Ajibu is tough, no doubt about it, but I believe I am on a completely different level. I plan to make short work of him. I am faster, sharper, and more strategic. That will be the difference on the night.”
