DAWN empowers Savanna City women

DAWN brought three generations of women together in Savannah City for a vibrant empowerment session.

In a powerful move to celebrate and recognise the role played by women in society, the Democratic Alliance Women Network (DAWN) brought three generations of women together for a vibrant women’s empowerment session.

The event, supported by hundreds of DA members and the community at large, was attended by 150 elderly women, around 50 young women and more than 50 girls. The gathering combined traditional entertainment, motivational talks, prayer and community discussions, creating a day of celebration.

The session also created a platform where women could speak openly about some of the challenges facing their communities. The event began on a lively note with a performance by Inkanyezi Zokusa Traditional Dancing Group, made up of performers from surrounding communities. Their energetic performance brought a strong cultural spirit to the gathering.

Opening the event, DAWN Chairperson Refiloe Teixeria encouraged women to recognise their value and play an active role in building stronger families and communities.

The keynote address was delivered by Pastor Busi Maseko, who encouraged women to remain rooted in Christ during difficult times. She emphasised the central role women play.

“We need to embrace the important role we play in our families and communities because without us, communities cannot function correctly,” Maseko said.

Women in attendance had the opportunity to share their experiences and concerns around gender-based violence, abuse and substance abuse. The discussions highlighted the need for communities to work together to support families and address social challenges affecting women and young people.

One of the highlights of the event was a surprise visit from Midvaal Mayor Peter Teixeira.
Teixeira donated 150 blankets to elderly women, a gesture that was met with excitement, smiles and applause. Teixeria, spent time interacting with residents and listening to community members.

Midvaal DA ward candidates and councillors, including Denelle Dreyer from Ward 9 and Jane Erasmus from Ward 15, were also present at the event. The women leaders joined Savannah City residents in highlighting the importance of women’s participation in community leadership.

For the women of Savannah City, the gathering was a day of faith, culture, fellowship and recognition – bringing different generations together and reminding the community that when women are supported and empowered, families and communities become stronger.
