R49m substation unveiled in Savanna City

Midvaal Local Municipality has unveiled a R49 million substation in Savanna City to increase electricity capacity, improve distribution and support the area’s growing demand for reliable power.

Midvaal Local Municipality Mayor Peter Teixeira has once again delivered on one of his mayoral undertakings, investing in key infrastructure by unveiling a R49m Savanna City Substation.

The completion of the substation is proof that these undertakings are not just promises but are delivering tangible results and improving residents’ lives. The project aims to increase electricity capacity and improve distribution. The substation is an important addition to electricity infrastructure, increasing capacity to meet the growing demand for electricity in the area. According to the municipality, the multi-year project was completed on time and within budget.

“The project forms part of the municipality’s ongoing investment in infrastructure to ensure that communities have access to reliable and sustainable electricity services.”

The construction of the substation included the development of key electrical infrastructure in accordance with Eskom standards and specifications. This included the construction of the substation terrace and earth mat, plinths and foundations. The project also included the construction of an 88 kV control room, equipped with the required ventilation and warning signage, as well as 11 kV switching rooms, a control room and a load control room.

Midvaal says the project contributed to the local economy, creating 25 jobs during the construction phase. A total of 10 Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) were also subcontracted to participate in the project.

Previous electrical improvements in the area include the electrification of 453 fully subsidised housing units in Savanna City, at a cost of over R8.3m. Midvaal continues to unlock further development, ensuring that its infrastructure keeps pace with that growth.
