VEREENIGING. – “I’ve never won anything in my life before. To win a million rand at once was so unexpected that I still have to get used to the idea,” says retired Regional Court Magistrate Zack Mashobane of Vereeniging.
He is the lucky winner in President Hyper’s “Win a Million Rand” competition that was running from January to July this year. Magistrate Mashobane’s name was drawn from 1 039 056 till slip entries.

“I didn’t expect to win and didn’t even go to the Izak Steyl Stadium on July 16 for the draw.” He was busy studying for his upcoming Unisa exams when he got the call from President Hyper, telling him that he should hurry to the stadium to claim his cheque to the value of R1 million.
He could only believe it when he saw the massive cheque with his name written on it.
Mr Mashobane hasn’t yet decided what he will do with the money, but for now, it is safely deposited in the bank. “I will definitely spoil my wife Sefora with a nice present, but I have to complete my exams first,” he says.
He grew up in humble circumstances in Sharpeville, where he got a good and very moral upbringing from his parents in their Catholic household. He worked for the Justice Department for some three decades during which time he obtained three law degrees from Unisa. At the moment he is studying towards a Master’s degree in Theology – again through Unisa.
“Through the years I took a lot of things for granted but at this stage of my life I begin to understand the role religion and faith plays in a person’s life. When I look back on my life, I can only thank God for helping me achieve my goals and giving me a good life. For that reason, I dedicate my Master’s degree to the Lord and maybe in good time become a pastor.”
The Mashobane couple has three children, a son and two daughters, who are also very well qualified academically. Their son is an attorney, one daughter is a medical doctor and the youngest has a degree in actuarial science. Mr Mashobane and his wife are also the proud grandparents of three grandchildren.
Mr Mashobane says he was so overwhelmed the Saturday at the sports stadium that he didn’t thank President Hyper properly. “I went back to the store this week to thank them thoroughly and tell them exactly how elated I am!”
