Two arrested for seizing copper

VEREENIGING. - Vereeniging Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda reports that two African male suspects aged 35 and 43 were arrested recently at the corner of Leslie and Rhodes Avenue after they were seen stealing copper cables worth R15 000.

“The two were spotted by security officers conducting a patrol in the vicinity while they were loading the cable into a Toyota Camry at Arcelor Mittal.” Funda adds that the two suspects were detained at the Vereeniging Police Station and will soon make their first appearance in the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court to answer to charges of theft of copper cable.

Funda further states that a total of 23 people were arrested for various crimes last week, adding that all the arrested suspects will be appearing before a magistrate soon. The community of Three Rivers is warned against the high rate of car thefts in the area.
“Theft of motor vehicles is very high in Three Rivers. The car brands targeted are VW Polos, Toyotas and BMWs. Four cars have been reported stolen and eight cases of house break-in and theft have been opened in Three Rivers this past weekend alone, which is a matter of concern to us.
Theft out of motor vehicles is also going up in the CBD. It is against this background that we are saying people coming to do business in the CBD must not display their jewellery or leave their valuables unattended in the car,” Funda concludes.
