Community fury over land invasion

Hundreds of residents from as far as Orange Farms, Lenasia and surrounding areas invaded private land in Waterdal behind Zone 10 near Boiketlong recently.

SEBOKENG. – Hundreds of residents from as far as Orange Farms, Lenasia and surrounding areas invaded private land in Waterdal behind Zone 10 near Boiketlong recently. It was rumoured that the land is reserved for the new development of houses for Boiketlong.

The spokesperson of Wildebeesfontein Evaton Community Organisation (WECO) under the branch leadership of Simon Khati said they have registered 40 households. Some of the informal settlers said they have paid R8000 to the WECO. However, they could not give the name of the receiver.
“We indicated they should occupy the land until we sort out the issue,” said WECO’s Mandla Nangalembe. However he denied having received money from the disgruntled community. “Maybe political parties are the ones behind the illegal selling.”
The Emfuleni Local Municipality MMC for Housing, Jan Moshoadiba, said the government will never tolerate illegal invaders.
He said that the area is earmarked for the residents of Boiketlong.
The community of Boiketlong was upset when shacks and buildings were erected and they went out in numbers and attacked the invaders.
Sebokeng Police arrived while some residents were busy erecting shacks and warned that should the owner of the land open a case of trespass, they will start making arrests.
