SHARPEVILLE. – About four residents of Tshepiso Phase 5 in Sharpeville plan to lodge a complaint against police who shot at them wit rubber bullets while they barricaded the Boy Louw Street between Steelpark and Tshepiso last week Friday.

Residents said that their frustration for not having water for almost four weeks is what led them to close the roads. “We were leading a peaceful protest. All we did was close the road. No tyres were burnt and no cars were stoned.” Residents claim that on their arrival, police shot at them without even giving them a warning or telling them to disperse. Emergency personnel were called to the scene and the injured people were taken to hospital.

Vereeniging spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda confirms that a case of public violence was lodged and Public Order Police were deployed to the scene. “At the moment, there has been no complaint lodged against the police for shooting at residents.”

The water issue has still not been resolved.
