EMFULENI. – The Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) through the Mayoral Spokesperson Lebohang Mofokeng, has revealed that Eskom has been successfully interdicted from disconnecting ELM until the matter is finalised
According to Mofokeng, ELM Mayor Jacob Khawe sustained his posture on keeping lights on for his residents.
“Once more the people of Emfuleni, including business, hospitals, schools are safe. This comes after the Gauteng Local Division High Court earlier on the 31st July 2018 which granted an interim order against Eskom to cut off electricity in Emfuleni.
On August 24, the Municipality represented by Morongoa Seleka attorneys was granted a postponement. The attorneys further secured an assurance in compliance with the order dated the 31st July that Eskom shall keep the electricity supply to the Municipality without any interruptions until the matter at hand is finalised. ”
Mofokeng said that the Emfuleni attorneys agreed on a postponement due to four other businesses that joined Cape Gate application, these businesses later decided to withdraw their papers and wait for the main case. “The court agreed that all parties will exchange papers by the 17th September 2018, and a special hearing date will be announced by the Deputy Chief Justice upon engagement with the attorneys.”
Mofokeng states that the status quo for Cape Gate and Others to pay their services to ELM remains until this matter is concluded .”The Executive Mayor expressed his deep gratitude and respect to the Golden Triangle Chamber of Commerce, GTCoC and its affiliates for standing together against this unconstitutional, unlawful, irrational, immoral and unreasonable act by Eskom.”
