There were a lot of expectations before the elections, with many convinced it was the end of an era for Jordaan. But the results showed how popular Danny Jordaan is still within SAFA Regional structures.

The truth is that Zungu didn’t stand a chance for obvious reasons: he didn’t come from SAFA Regional structures.

He was comprised!

The regions have the power to choose who leads them. This is a lesson for everyone on how a football association operates.

Zakes’ Sports Corner believed that Zungu was compromised by people desperate to take Jordaan out of power.

But having said this, it is a fact that SAFA experienced lots of problems under Jordaan’s leadership. For example, much has been said and written about mismanagement and misuse of funds at SAFA Headquarters.

This is why many believed that it was time for a change of leadership.

They believed Zungu was the right person to bring fresh change in South African football. But Jordaan beat him hands down. There were 157 votes in favour of Jordaan and 82 for Zungu.

The manner in which he was supposed to have been pushed out of power was barbaric.

This man gave so much to South African football. To remind those with short memories, Jordaan played a significant role when South Africa bid to host the 2010 World Cup.

Back to elections, Danny Jordaan said he didn’t re-elect himself as SAFA president; he was re-elected.

The only reason why the regions re-elected him is that Zungu was not from within SAFA structures. To make it worse, Zungu couldn’t even convince SAFA KZN to vote for him. The SAFA KZN president came out in public to declare support for Jordaan.

Zakes’ Sports Corner challenges former professional soccer players to be part of the SAFA regions structure in their respective regions and involve themselves in local football associations.

This is the only way they can win the trust of the regions and have a voice.
