VANDERBIJLPARK – The Vaal River was turned into a floating party as the much-anticipated Vaal River Carnival was officially launched.
The launch, held at Stonehaven, brought together Emfuleni Local Municipality officials, carnival organisers, product owners, sponsors and members of the media.
Guests climbed aboard the Spirit of Gen cruiser and set off on the mighty Vaal River while speeches and celebrations unfolded on board.
As the boat moved along the river, guests were treated to stunning views of one of the Vaal’s biggest natural attractions.
Emfuleni Executive Mayor Hassan Mako said the carnival was about more than just entertainment. He said it was an opportunity to put the Vaal firmly on the tourism map.
“We are launching this carnival while cruising on this beautiful, mighty Vaal River,” said Mako.
The mayor said the Vaal River had played an important role in South Africa’s history and development and remained one of the region’s greatest natural assets.
He also called for responsible reporting about the area. Mako referred to recent reports about a crocodile allegedly spotted in the Vaal River, saying unclear reporting could create unnecessary panic and scare away visitors.
“We must report, but we must report responsibly. We must tell the truth, but we must also tell the whole story,” he said.
According to Mako, the Vaal should not only be associated with politics and history.
He said the region also has beauty, wildlife, tourism, business opportunities, and entertainment. “The Vaal has a story worth telling. It is a story of resilience, history, political significance, natural beauty, enterprise and opportunity,” he said.
Mako said the municipality wanted people across South Africa and beyond to see the Vaal as a place that is ready to welcome visitors and investors.
“We want South Africans and the international community to know that the Vaal is open for business, open for tourism and open to investment,” he said.
He thanked the carnival organisers, sponsors, media partners, product owners and other stakeholders for helping bring the event to life.
“Let us work together to tell our story, protect our natural heritage and show South Africa and the world the greatness and beauty of the Vaal,” said Mako.
With the launch now done, attention turns to the Vaal River Carnival itself, which promises to put the region’s river, people, entertainment and tourism products in the spotlight.
