Who or what caused the fire that destroyed the ANC’s regional office in Vereeniging in the midnight hours of last night and this morning (28 January 2019)?
This is the the question the SAPS’ forensic unit will answer as soon as their investigations are completed. These investigations are done amid rumours that a faction within the ANC itself, might be responsible for the crime.
In a statement released earlier today by the ANC Gauteng Province, the party says it “condemns in the strongest possible terms acts of criminality by unknown arsonists who burned our Sedibeng regional offices in the early hours of this morning”.
“At this stage the report we have from the caretaker, who was on the property at the time, is that he was awakened by the sound of breaking windows and the next thing he knew the building was on fire. He escaped unharmed from the incident.
“A case of arson has been opened this morning with the Vereeniging SAPS so that the police can help  bring to book those behind this criminal act.
“The burning of our offices is tantamount to an attack on the people of Sedibeng and it is an act of cowardice by people who want to use violence and threats to undermine the work of the ANC in the Region.”
