BOIPATONG. – A case of malicious damage to property has been opened after an unruly mob allegedly hijacked a truck before setting it alight in Boipatong last week.
The incident happened in the late evening on the corner of Frikkie Meyer and Nobel Boulevard.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Thembeka Koago said a Zimbabwean driver was forced to flee and leave the truck.
This comes after the singing protesters suddenly started pelting him with rocks. The damage has been estimated to R18 500.
According to witnesses, the driver was not aware of the protest. The incident happened late in the evening on the corner of Frikkie Meyer and Noble Road, on March 27. The truck was moved out of the road near the filling station. After the driver ran away, it was doused with petrol and set alight.
Earlier the day, another truck driver, delivering scrap metal, was rescued by Police in a Nyala.
Immediately as the protesters advanced to the truck, police started firing rubber bullets. The truck was safely escorted out of the lions den by police. The protesters are part of the labour broker contractor employees, who are demanding to be permanently employed by Arcelor Mittal South Africa. They want full benefits.
As part of the protest they barricaded roads with burning tyres, scrap metal and rocks.
