ELM’s infrastructure is crumbling: Hlophe

VANDERBIJLPARK.- Workers at the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) water utility, Metsi-a Lekoa are unable to do their work due to a lack of resources.

It is said that only one car from the recent, newly introduced fleet of forty-five was allocated to the water utility. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, ELM Democratic Alliance (DA) Councillor, Ntombikayise Hlophe, said that a case in point about the crumbling services is that earlier last week a burst pipe in George Duff Street, Vanderbijlpark was reported to the municipality at 23:40 but was only attended to the following afternoon.
Hlophe said that in some cases water leaks go unattended for days to a week, and even longer.
“The municipality is not committed to resolving water leaks with promptness as it takes repair teams days to fix any leaking or bust pipe. “The municipality has also been recording an average three to four burst pipes a day.”
Hlophe said the Water and Sanitation infrastructure at the ELM is crumbling, resulting in a loss of large volumes of water. An enquiry on the matter had not been responded to by the ELM at the time of going to print.
