Man charged with police bribery

The man was arrested and charged with bribery after his fellow compatriot was arrested and charged with selling cigarettes.

SEBOKENG. – An Ethiopian man (38) was arrested by the members of the Sedibeng Flying Squad in Zone 7B, Sebokeng, recently.

The man was arrested and charged with bribery after his fellow compatriot was arrested and charged with selling cigarettes (non-essential goods) during the lockdown. It is said that he followed the police and upon arrival at the Evaton police station produced an amount of  R1 270 (One thousand two hundred and seventy rands), as a bribe for police to release his compatriot.

It was then that he too, was arrested and charged with bribery.

Police Spokesperson, Captain Aubrey Moopeloa said that community members, especially around Evaton are encouraged to comply with regulations of the disaster management lockdown, failing which, will leave police with no option but to act against violators of the law and arrest them.

“Evaton police also discourage the community from bribing the police as it is an offence to do so.”
