Redan resident shoots fellow resident after gardening brawl

Vereeniging.- The community of Redan is still in shock after an incident during which the "old man's neighborhood" garbage collector shot dead another resident during an "unnecessary quarrel" over a garden set.

Daniel Jacobus “Daan” Opperman Lowings (69), a resident who places and empties rubbish bins at residents’ homes, now faces a charge of murder. The incident happened on Monday, 31 August, just before 17:00 after he allegedly pulled out his firearm during an argument and shot Leon du Toit (60), through the left side of his jaw. Du Toit died at the scene. Lowings allegedly left the murder scene but was later arrested at his home. He will soon appear in the magistrate’s court in Vereeniging. Lowings also allegedly fired numerous shots at the owner of a local security company after confronting him. He also allegedly aimed his firearm at bystanders and children. Residents with whom Vaalweekblad spoke described the incident as “unnecessary”. According to Jurie Mienie, owner of JAS Security, which handles Redan’s security, Lowings was removing the garden set from Chanel Viljoen’s old house (number 67) when he was confronted by residents. Viljoen is in the process of moving and would move the furniture to her new home (number 101) pull. Du Toit and Lowings allegedly became involved in a heated argument, after which Lowings allegedly pulled out his firearm and shot Du Toit. He then allegedly fired shots at Mienie. Mienie ran to his house to get a bulletproof vest. Lowings was later arrested by police in his home and his firearm was confiscated from him. When Vaalweekblad visited the scene the next morning, Viljoen’s chairs were still just as untouched in the back of Lowings’ bakkie, which was still standing in front of house number 67. Capt. Fikile Funda, a spokesperson for the police in Vereeniging, confirmed the incident. According to Capt. Funda officers found the deceased in front of house 67 where he was lying on the ground with a gunshot wound through the left side of his jaw. He said the deceased and the suspect had an argument with each other and said that a charge of murder was being investigated by the police.
