Outrage as power outages continue

VEREENIGING.- Days after a group of unhappy residents from Sonlandpark and Falcon Ridge gathered in front of the residence of the mayor of the Emfuleni Local Municipality, demanding to speak to him about ongoing power outages which sometimes lasts for days, residents of another suburb were plunged into darkness.

Daleen Venter, ward councillor for Three Rivers, told Ster last week that the explosion caused several faults along a network of electrical cables supplying the neighbourhood with power.
By late last week the municipality was still struggling to find and repair faults and residents had threatened to embark on protest action after nearly two weeks without electricity in Three Rivers which caused all their frozen food to rot.
Venter explained to Ster in a video interview that a 2.7km long cable supplying the neighbourhood with power was in a terrible state and needed replacement.
She added that the right procurement processes needed to be followed in order for repairs to be done.
The fact that the municipality has been placed under administration complicated matters.
According to Venter a general lack of maintenance as well as infrastructure which did not match the pace of expansion and development of the suburb were to blame for the electricity woes regularly experienced by residents.
“If this is not repaired then power failures will continue and it will get progressively worse,” she warned.
