Sharpeville young star scores in Soweto derby

The Buccaneers returned for the second half with renewed attacking intent.

SEDIBENG.- Tshepang Moremi proved once again that he relishes playing against Kaizer Chiefs after firing Orlando Pirates to a dramatic 2-1 victory in the Premiership League derby on Saturday.

A capacity crowd packed into the FNB Stadium in Soweto to witness the fierce rivalry unfold.

Pirates drew first blood in the 24th minute before Chiefs hit back on the 30-minute mark to level the score, leaving the teams deadlocked at one goal apiece heading into the interval.

The Buccaneers returned for the second half with renewed attacking intent.

Moremi, the Bafana Bafana forward, kept the Chiefs defence on the back foot all afternoon and capitalised in the 55th minute, netting the winner when the match looked destined for a draw.

This is not the first time the Sharpeville-born star has haunted the Glamour Boys, having also found the back of the net in Pirates’ 3-1 league victory over Chiefs last season.

His latest heroics follow his recent inclusion in Pitso Mosimane’s preliminary Bafana Bafana squad ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Kenya on November 13.

Mosimane will certainly have plenty of attacking options at his disposal given Moremi’s brilliant form. The forward also recently scored a brace in Pirates’ 3-0 Carling Black Label Cup win against Milford.

Although Moremi missed out on the recent qualifier against Guinea after being recalled to replace Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Lebohang Maboe, the setback clearly did nothing to dent his confidence.

Following his stellar performance in the Soweto derby, he looks well-placed to secure a permanent spot in the final national squad.
