SEBOKENG.- Sedibeng Ster Sport went down to memory lane with one of the longest servants of the beautiful game of football, Jerry Mtetwa (62). Mtetwa is one of the oldest coaches in Sedibeng since the days of Evaton Football Association. He reflected back to when Evaton Football Association used to have well organized structures for junior leagues. Mtetwa himself used to own Vaal Tigers, formerly known as Vaal United from Zone 7 in Sebokeng. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport recently, Mtetwa said that Vaal is no longer producing professional soccer players like it used to be the case in the past. He said in the past junior leagues used to be playing all over Emfuleni but that this is no longer the case. “Look, this is not a secret, we are no longer producing players like before. In the past every PSL club would have players from this region, your Jomo Cosmos, Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and many other teams. But today we can count few players from this region who play top flight football. I see that Chiefs are promoting young players who come from Vaal which is a good thing. But we need more players in PSL like before. “Even when Vaal Professionals was still campaigning in PSL, we had players all over the PSL,” he said. Mtetwa said it is sad to see the Zone 7 Stadium being vandalized because it is the only stadium that was the pride of Zone 7 and the Evaton community. “This is the same venue the late Coach Mahlomola “Taylor” Mokoena used to conduct development coaching programs at.” Mtetwa said that SAFA must bring back old football demarcations as he believes that this current football demarcation contributes to the poor standard of football development in this region. Mtetwa further said that the standard of the development of football is affected by gambling games that are taking place in the townships. He said that in the past community soccer grounds like Vaal Killers ground used to host junior soccer league matches but today the venue is hosting soccer tournaments every weekend.
