Murder suspect dies in police custody
A man accused of killing his father has died while in police custody.
SHARPEVILLE – The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a 35-year-old man who was arrested and charged with the murder of his 75-year-old father.
The police were summoned to a residence in Phomolong after the victim was allegedly assaulted with a ceramic plate during an argument with his son on August 29 at approximately 19:30.
Police and emergency services attended the scene, where the elderly man was certified dead by paramedics. The suspect initially fled the scene and was apprehended by authorities. He was arrested and charged with murder.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Thembeka Maxambela says, “A man was arrested for the alleged murder of his father in Sharpeville. The suspect later died while in police custody. An inquest case docket has been opened.”
Maxambela confirms that IPID was notified about the incident, adding that the circumstances surrounding the man’s death are now a subject of the directorate’s investigation.
