Project to increase waste water treatment plant capacity in Midvaal

Midvaal Local Municipality (MLM) with the help of the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS)  is implementing a project to increase the design capacity of the Meyerton Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTW).

MIDVAAL. – The project will be carried out via the the Regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant (RBIG).

According to MMC for Engineering Services Hennie Oosthuysen, the WWTW has been experiencing operational problems due to waste water inflow which is more than the WWTW design capacity.

“The capacity of the plant will increase from 10 Mega litres per day to 25 Mega litres per day for the plant to operate efficiently and to accommodate the current wastewater inflow.

“The construction of the project started in 2015 and could not be completed due to contractual challenges with the appointed contractor who later left site without completing the project in the 2017.”

Oosthuysen said there had not been any movement to complete the upgrade which resulted in operations of the plant being affected.

“This high inflow affects the entire operation of the current WWTW leading to constant malfunctioning of associated mechanical works.

“For the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 DWS financial year, provision has been made to complete the upgrade of the plant.”

DWS together with a newly appointed consultant are finalising tender documentation to go out on tender to appoint contractors to implement the project to complete the upgrade of the Meyerton plant.

“MLM will continue to communicate with DWS and conduct its own planned maintenance on the existing plant.”
