Copper worth R900 000 stolen at Munic substation

The police in Boipatong have recovered copper worth and estimated R900 000 which was stolen at Munic substation in the early hours of Monday morning.

BOIPATONG. – Police spokesperson Sergeant Thembeka Maxambela reports that a security officer stationed at the substation heard a knock on the window of the guard room at 00:30.

 “After a while, the door of the guard room was opened and ten African males entered the room. Two of the men were armed and pointed a firearms at the security guard, subsequently ordering him to remain in the guard room.

 “They took three cell phones from the guard room and went on to seize copper worth an estimated R900 000 then fled the scene.”  

Maxambela states that preliminary investigations in the matter led the police to a house in extension 2 where a white Nissan bakkie was found loaded with copper cables, bare core cable, armouring wire, bus bar wire and control cables.

  “A 37-year-old male was arrested and charged with business robbery while a 47 year-old second hand goods dealer was also arrested and charged with possession of stolen property.”

Police are appealing to anyone who can assist them in their investigation in tracing the suspects to contact Captain Mokhotu on 082-778 7937 or 016 930-2328.
