Drunk female driver arrested for knocking down traffic officer

A 35-year-old drunken female driver has been arrested after running over a 33-year-old female Gauteng traffic officer.

GAUTENG. – The incident happened on Easter Friday during an operation  on the N14 Pretoria/ Krugersdorp freeway next to the R55.

Spokesperson Sello Maremane reports that upon further inspection by the officers who were on duty with the affected officer, the suspect was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.

“The breathalyzer reading recorded 1.29 milligram per 1 000 milliliters which is five times over the legal limit of 0.24 milligram.

“The driver was immediately arrested and detained at Olievenhoutbosch police station to face charges relating to Driving under the influence of alcohol as well as an alternative charge of Reckless and Negligent driving.”

Following the incident, the Gauteng Traffic Police raised concern about the irresponsible driving behavior during the Easter weekend.

“Our observation is that a lot of these incidents occur as a result of non-compliance with the rules of the road. As we approach the last days of the Easter weekend, I would like to encourage motorists to obey the rules of the road and keep Gauteng City Region safe.

“I appeal to drivers to take charge of their safety and that of officers on the ground. The incident that occurred on the N14 is highly regrettable and undermines our road safety efforts while also jeopardizing the lives of our officers.”

Maremane states that driving under the influence of alcohol constitutes a criminal offence which may lead to 7 years imprisonment without the option of a fine.

“The Gauteng Traffic Police will monitor the case closely to ensure that the suspect is subjected to a Criminal Justice System and face the full might of law.”

Maremane says the Gauteng Traffic Police will not be derailed in its efforts to ensure safety on Gauteng roads during the last days of the Easter period and beyond.

“The Gauteng Traffic Police wishes the officer a speedy recovery.”
