Texeira accused of trying to reinstate wife at the MLM

The DA said that there have been no efforts whatsoever by him to reinstate his wife.

MIDVAAL.- The Democratic Alliance (DA) has rejected a report which it terms vague, and has unsubstantiated comments that appeared in the Sunday Times newspaper this past weekend regarding the wife of the Executive Mayor of Midvaal Local Municipality (MLM), Peter Teixeira.

The party said that the article, without citing the source of the allegation, and despite being provided with the facts, insinuates that Teixeira is attempting to reinstate his wife to her former position in the municipality. The DA further said that Refiloe Teixeira was dismissed from her position as Ward Committee Officer in the Office of the Speaker in 2021 and that she had been an employee of the municipality before Teixeira became a councillor.

“Mayor Teixeira’s involvement in the entire process has been handled with absolute integrity, where he has recused himself from all discussions, including closed caucus discussions, to avoid a conflict of interest. The reinstatement efforts emanated from a motion delivered to Council by the VF+ earlier this year, and are based more on an issue of principle, noting that three other staff members were involved in the matter. Mayor Teixeira also recused himself from the council meeting when the motion was deliberated on,” the party said further adding that the disciplinary process has been referred for external, independent, and impartial evaluation to ensure that there is no political interference.

The party said that there have been no efforts whatsoever by Teixeira to reinstate his wife.

“This is purely a matter of labour law, and whether the affected individuals were unfairly dismissed, and what remedy can be applied to the matter. The DA stands behind the process followed by the municipality, under the guidance of the Speaker and The Acting Mayor elected to facilitate the speedy and fair conclusion of the matter.”
