BOPHELONG.- Boipatong born and GladAfrica’s Uthongathi Head Coach Papi Zothwane is among the big names expected to attend the Super Sixteen Cup scheduled to take place at France grounds in Muvhango Ext 15 in Bophelong from June 5-16.
This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by one of the organisers, Duku Duku Mahlangu who said Zothwane and other scouts will be in attendance to spot talent. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Zothwane and other coaches confirmed their attendance. Zothwane became a household name in South African football when he joined Mamelodi Sundowns from Golden Arrows. His talent blossomed when he played for the now defunct Boipatong Real Rangers in the Bob Save Super Blow Last 16 at Zamdela Stadium in 2001. This is where most of Real Rangers players caught the attention of PSL clubs. Meanwhile, Mahlangu said that the tournament will start at the weekend of June 5 and 6, with the final scheduled to take place on June 16 at the same venue. He said that the tournament is for the under-17 and under-21 since these age groups are the most important in the development of football. He further added that most of the teams, especially ABC Motsepe and GladAfrica Champions teams are in desperate need of this age category players.
“We want to create opportunities for these youngsters because it is difficult for most of them to travel to other regions and provinces to attend trials. We saw it fitting to organise this tournament and invite scouts to come and ‘fish for the talent’. Papi Zothwane is one of them because he is also from Bophelong and he understands our challenges. He grew up playing football here before he went to make a name for himself in top flight football,” said Mahlangu.
