Pirates return home with a silver medal

It was a case of missed chances for the local side.

SEDIBENG.- The Orlando Pirates returned home from Nigeria with a silver medal as the CAF Confederation Cup runner ups.
This was after they lost 5-4 on penalties to RSB Berkane in the CAF Confederation Cup final at Godwill Akpabio International Stadium in Nigeria on Friday night.

If Orlando Pirates were crowned the CAF competions’ champions, they could have added a second star of the jersey. Former Orlando Pirates Coach, Roger De Sa, prior to this final, posted on his Twitter account that it is time Orlando Pirates to bring home a second star. However, many said he didn’t know what he was talking about because this is not a CAF Champions League.

Sedibeng Ster Sport can confirm that indeed Orlando Pirates could have added a second star on their jersey if they were crowned the CAF Confederation Cup champions. The difference between CAF Confederation and CAF Champions League stars is the colours, silver and gold. The CAF Confederation star is silver while the CAF Championship’s star for the winner is gold.

Sedibeng Ster Sport, also learned that Bafana Bafana was supposed to have a star on their jersey after they were crowned the champions of the African Cup of Nations in 1996. This is a matter that at one stage was raised to Sedibeng Ster Sport by former SuperSport United midfieder, Peter ‘Fire’ Khoabane who now works as a radion football analyst. However, it is not clear why Bafana Bafana doesn’t have a star for winning the AFCON Cup in 1996. Some of the football expects told Sedibeng Ster Sport that it is up to a team to add the star on their jersey after they are crowned the continental champions and not specifically the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
