GAUTENG. – The programme will be led by the Gauteng Department of Social Development under the leadership of the newly elected MEC Mbali Hlophe.
The announcement was made last week when Lesufi announced his new cabinet.
Lesufi said the initiative will form part of the province’s 2030 vision which aims to put youth at the centre of policy making decisions.
Lesufi urged parents of children that are nyaope addicts to come forward. He said that the application process would be similar to the school application process.
“We want to take those children for six months as the state. Anyone who is addicted to nyaope will be taken to a farm owned by the state. They are going to stay there and we will rehabilitate them.
Lesufi said that the programme would not be done through Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) as they have been previously tasked with degwith the problem but seem to have failed.
“NGOs have been dealing with this problem but this problem is continuing,” he said.
Lesufi said the Department of Health would provide medication while the Department of Education will assess them.
“If they are ready to go to school we will carry the bill as the state. We will kill this thing of nyaope. We can’t surrender our young people to nyaope,” Lesufi concludes.
