GAUTENG. – 24-year-old Mongezi Shange from Boipatong today pleaded guilty to slaying his mom Nokulunga Patricia Shange (47). The incident happened on 14 December 2021 at their home in Boipatong.
Shange is on trial at the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court on the count of murder and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (ghb) after he stabbed and killed his mother and subsequently stabbed his step-father who had attempted to stop him from killing his mother.
Tensions were high this morning as Nokulunga’s family listened to details of how she was gruesomely murdered by her only son.
In his statement, Shange detailed how he came home on the day high on crystal meth and found his step-father sitting in the lounge and his mother in her bedroom.
“I waited for him to go outside for a smoke and when he did, I got into my mother’s bedroom, locked the door and proceeded to stab her three times on the neck, unprovoked.”
Shange also pleaded guilty to the charge of assault gbh.
Speaking to the Sedibeng Ster, Nolunga’s family called for Mongezi to be given the maximum sentence for the crimes that he committed.
“Our sister suffered while she was still alive. Mongezi would demand money from her and threaten to kill her when they had a disagreement. He ultimately did what he had always said he would, he killed her,” they said.
The sister of the deceased Zanele Mahali (40) says, “As a family, we are constantly in pain because it’s hard for us to forget how he took our sister’s life. My 70-year-old mother is struggling to heal from what he did. We would like to see justice being served. We want him to spend his life in jail.”
Shange is expected to appear at the Palm Ridge Magistarte’s Court on Wednesday for his sentencing.
