
GAUTENG. Reports coming through this morning are that former Orlando Pirates stalwart John “Dungi” Moeti has passed away.
The 55-year-old was both a Pirates and Bafana legend, winning two of the biggest trophies in African football. He was also a member of the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations winning squad and a member of the squad that finished runners-up in 1998. Moeti also won the CAF Champions League (Cup of Champions) in 1995 with Pirates.
City Press reports that according to the family, Dungi, as he was known, had been receiving specialist medical care for the past eight months.
“John succumbed to his illness in the early hours of this morning (February 6) at home, surrounded by his family and brethren in prayer. We thank you sincerely for your prayers and steadfast support. The family wishes to be afforded privacy during this time of loss, and funeral details will be advised in due course,” a statement by the family reportedly said.
Speaking about Moeti on Newzroom Afrika, former Orlando Pirates Captain Marks “ Go man go” Maponyane sang his praises.
“What a gentleman of the game. I am sad to hear of John’s death, he had a big heart.”
Moeti was capped 29 times for South Africa and featured for Orlando Pirates between 1995 and 1999 before joining SuperSport United.
