Young quadriplegic still needs help
"Please help us, my son has grown up and with the years going it has become difficult for me to take care of him."
SASOLBURG. – Although a few business people came around to help the young quadriplegic man after Sedibeng Ster published his plight last year, Gift Mokoena’s situation is still the same.
Sedibeng Ster reported last year that the now 21-year-old boy’s mother, Mmamokoena Mokoena from Amelia in Sasolburg has been sent from pillar to post when applying for his grant because his mother’s identity document (ID) has been blocked by the Department of Home Affairs.
The young man cannot talk, is in a wheelchair, and wears diapers like a small child.

The young man’s father is deceased and he is under the care of his mother whose Identity Document (ID) was lost when she went to the Home Affairs offices to apply for a new one she found that she was blocked from doing so, this has led to all this dilemma.
Gift has a birth certificate but cannot be issued an ID as her mother’s ID is needed for such a transaction, they both therefore in turn, can not receive the necessary grants that they are much in need of.
The mother, Mamokoena Mokoena confirmed that the situation is still the same.
“ We are in desperate need of the grants because we need to buy food and pampers for him,” said the distraught mother.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster then, Peter Motloung, the Chairperson of the All-in-One Disability Association who is helping with Mokoena’s case said that all they want as an association is for the boy to receive help from the Social Development Department so that he can receive a grant as this will go a long way in making both the child and the parent’s life easier.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster on Tuesday morning Motloung said: “ The situation is still the same, a couple of business people came around to help the family after you published the story but nothing has changed. The family is still living in poverty, they have nothing at all. We have tried to contact the Social Development offices in Sasolburg, their main offices in the province but no one seems to be willing to help us, Motloung said.
