Amateur Boxing Tournament in Boipatong

"The tournament caters to both boys and girls and we appeal to parents to encourage their children to participate in boxing as well."

BOIPATONG.- Royal Boxing Club in conjunction with Wonderboy Boxing Club will host an Amateur Boxing Tournament at Boipatong Community Hall on Saturday.

This was announced to Sedibeng Ster Sport by Royal Boxing Club founder Cutter Mahlangu. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Mahlangu said all the Sedibeng boxing clubs are invited to participate in this development tournament. He added that the main aim of this tournament is to select the boxers who will form part of Sedibeng Boxing Academy. Mahlangu, who is the father of Bongani Mahlagu said there is a need for young talent in boxing.

He believes that a tournament like this can discover ‘rough diamonds’ in South African boxing to say the least. Mahlangu told Sedibeng Ster Sport that for the past years, Sedibeng formerly known as Vaal Triangle is known for producing top boxers.

Sedibeng Ster Sport always reflects back to the days of the likes of Calton “Swing Carlie” Monnakgotla, Black Shamba Mthimkhulu, Shole Mokoena, David Potsane, Baby Lux Khambule, Aaron Kabi with great boxing managers such as “Big Ben” Mashinini, Mike Xaba, Ben Moeketsi to mention but few.

“We will like to invite all the boxing clubs in Sedibeng to come and be part of this tournament in an attempt to promote boxing in our communities. We all know that the Vaal Triangle as it was called, used to produce great boxers in the history of boxing. Look, apart from the tournament this is part of trying to promote boxing in our communities and discover more talent, both boys and girls.”
