Three police officers hit and ran over in Vaal Marina

"This unfortunate incident is making us to ask ourselves on what type of society are we living in where a driver can just knock off Police Officers without even stopping."

SEDIBENG. – The South African Policing Union (SAPU) in Gauteng has called for the arrest of a truck driver that was involved in a hit-and-run accident in Vaal Marina last Thursday.

A police officer died in the accident, while another together with a reservist, sustained serious injuries.
It is reported that at around 22:00 the three members from Vaal Marina SAPS were busy with a stop and search operation at R501 road near Vaal Marina police precinct. They stopped a private vehicle off the road and while busy with the driver they notice a truck coming at a high speed on a downhill.

They then flicked their torches towards the truck to slow down, unfortunately, the truck failed to stop and knocked down a state motor vehicle as well as the private vehicle from the back and also knocked down the three police officers. One officer succumbed to his injuries and was certified as such by paramedics on scene, another sustained serious injuries, a reservist also sustained a head injury and they were both admitted to hospital.

The whereabouts of the truck driver is still unknown since the driver never stopped after the accident but sped off from the scene.

SAPU Gauteng Provincial Secretary, Mogale Mmutle sent the union’s condolences to the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased while wishing the injured members a speedy recovery.
“We keep them in our prayers and plead with the police to leave no stone unturned till the perpetrator is brought to book.”
