BOPHELONG.- The Super 16 Soccer Tournament came to an end over the weekend with 14 Stars FC being crowned the champions.

Stars were crowned the tournament champions after they beat Celta Vigo Development FC 3-0 in an exciting final played at France’s dusty soccer ground in Muvhango, Bophelong.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Molefi “Duku Duku“ Mahlangu hailed the tournament as a great success. The tournament attracted a large number of supporters with the PSL teams on off-season. The local soccer fans packed the venue to capacity throughout the day to watch exciting football.

Some of the notable names that were been part of this tournament since it started were the Motsepe Foundation Championship Club, Uthongathi FC coach Papi Zothwane and his assistant, Solomon Mathe. Mahlangu said he was overwhelmed by the attendance from day one until the last day of the tournament. He said the fans enjoyed each and every moment of action throughout the day.

“We want to thank all the teams that participated in this tournament to keep the fans on the edge of their seats.  This was the best final with both teams showcasing their talent. We want to thank everyone who made this tournament a success especially the Bophelong community who came in big numbers to support their respective teams. It was a great advert for amateur football with so much quality. There is no doubt Vaal is blessed with talent and throughout the tournament I have seen players that can walk straight into the PSL clubs’ starting lineup.

“I witnessed pure talent and I asked myself why some of these players still play at the lower level. Look, most of the players I watch here deserve to play top-flight football. But I’m happy because some of the coaches who coach at the high level were here to witness what I’m talking about,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Thomas Tyre were crowned the champions in the master’s category after they beat Boipatong Masters 3-1 in the final played as curtain raisers for the senior teams.
