Warning: Excessive water consumption… water crisis looming!

Residents and businesses are urged to use water responsibly.

SEDIBENG.- Sedibeng municipalities, including Emfuleni, Midvaal, and Lesedi local municipalities, have been named by national water supplier Rand Water as overconsuming water, placing severe pressure on the supply network.

Operating under the Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) alongside major metropolitan areas like Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni, these local authorities are facing urgent warnings.

Rand Water said that while it is pumping water at maximum capacity, consumer demand continues to reach record levels.

“Sustained overconsumption is making it increasingly difficult to balance supply across the network and heightens the risk of disruptions unless demand is brought under control,” the water entity warned.

Residents and businesses are urged to use water responsibly.

Rand Water has called on all municipal customers to implement urgent reduction measures and warned that it will take appropriate steps, including curtailing water supply to overconsuming customers, to protect the bulk supply system if necessary.

“Water conservation is a shared responsibility. Municipalities, residents and businesses are urged to use water responsibly to help ensure a sustainable and equitable supply for all.”
