Sedibeng police destroy thousands of alcohol bottles

Amidst rising concerns over alcohol-related issues, authorities in Sedibeng destroyed thousands of confiscated alcohol bottles.

VEREENIGING – In a bold move to combat the alarming rise in serious crimes within Sedibeng communities, different law enforcement agencies destroyed thousands of bottles of alcohol on Wednesday, July 26.

According to police, the high rate of assaults, rape, murder, and attempted murder is attributed to unregulated alcohol places as there is non-compliance and no rules to mitigate excessive drinking.

Fourteen police stations made their way to Leeuwkuil waterworks in Vereeniging to destroy alcohol confiscated around the district during different operations.

The destruction was a sight to observe as crates upon crates of beer, spirits, and other alcoholic beverages were poured into massive drains and rendered undrinkable.

Under the leadership of the acting district commissioner, Brigadier Nikiwe Sefatsa, law enforcers took decisive action by destroying an estimated 5,844 milliliters of alcohol.

Different units such as Crime Prevention Wardens, Community Policing Forums, and Sedibeng Community Safety took part in the destruction.

Brigadier Sefatsa emphasized, “Excessive alcohol consumption is one of the major contributors to serious crimes and other social ills in our communities. It doesn’t only put individuals at risk but also tears apart the fabric of families and neighborhoods.”

Sefatsa added that the police’s action is to send a strong message to the community that the authorities are committed to tackling the root causes of crime and fostering a safer, healthier environment for all residents.
